The Contrast in Styles
Both clubs sit on maximum points, but they’ve got there in very different fashion. Arsenal have been the picture of control: a 3-0 win over Coventry, then a narrow but professional 1-0 away victory at Aston Villa courtesy of Bukayo Saka. Not a single shot has beaten David Raya so far this season.
Chelsea, by contrast, have been box office. A 3-2 opening win at Fulham was followed by a wild 4-3 victory over Brighton, with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro among the goals. It’s been thrilling to watch, but it’s come with a defensive health warning — Chelsea have now gone 18 consecutive league matches without a clean sheet, their longest such run since 1960-61.
That contrast sets up an obvious narrative for Sunday: can Arsenal’s defensive solidity smother Chelsea’s attacking flair, or will Alonso’s side finally find the goals to match their damage at the other end?
Team News
Arsenal go into the derby without two regular defensive starters. William Saliba and Jurrien Timber both remain sidelined through injury, which already forces some reshuffling at the back. There’s also a fresh fitness concern to monitor: Cristhian Mosquera was withdrawn late in the win at Villa Park holding the back of his thigh. Arteta described it as precautionary rather than a serious issue in his post-match press conference, but it may be enough to hand Ezri Konsa his first Arsenal start — fittingly, against the club he left this summer.
Declan Rice also came off during that Villa win, replaced by Martin Zubimendi, though he’s back in training and expected to be available. Kai Havertz continues to lead the line and has a strong record against his former club, having scored in three of his last three home appearances against Chelsea.
For the visitors, Xabi Alonso is without Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson, both out through injury, along with Marco Palestra.
The History Books Favour Arsenal
The recent head-to-head record is heavily tilted in Arsenal’s favour. The Gunners are unbeaten in their last ten meetings with Chelsea across all competitions — seven wins, three draws — and have won four straight home league games against them, their best such home run since the early 1990s. Chelsea’s last win in this fixture came back in August 2021.
Bookmakers reflect that history: Arsenal go into the weekend as clear favourites, priced around 13/18 to make it nine points from nine, with Chelsea out at 17/4 and the draw around 3/1.
Prediction
Given Arsenal’s watertight defence, home advantage, and a striker in Havertz who has Chelsea’s number, a narrow home win looks the most likely outcome — but with Chelsea’s front three of Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers capable of scoring against anybody, goals at the other end shouldn’t be ruled out. Kick-off is 4:30pm BST at the Emirates Stadium, with live coverage on Sky Sports in the UK.
